The course aims to explore the multiple artistic approaches that have been developed in relation to Art and Biology. A special emphasis will be placed on the development of collaborative art and biology projects where the artist has to learn some biological research skills in order to create the artwork. The course will have a series of seminar classes intended to provide background information on the current diversity of artistic discourses centred on biological sciences, and a forum for debate. It will be complemented with practical classes in the biology department, where the students will have the opportunity to experience basic biological research techniques and equipment, and their use as art medium.

The course aims to explore the multiple artistic approaches that have been developed in relation to Art and Biology, with the objective of finding an historical perspective concerning the emergence of today’s diversity of artistic discourses centred on biological sciences. A special emphasis will be placed on the development of collaborative art and biology projects where the artist has to learn the research skills in order to create the artwork within research laboratories – a process I have been actively pursuing.
